Hogan Park has been the long-time Midland institution for the Tall City layman, since it was the only public facility in town until Nueva Vista recently opened their daily-fee course on the west side. This facility originally opened in 1959, but upgraded with 9-hole additions in 1983, and again in 1998, making 36 holes available to Midland's hacks.
The two courses are surprisingly different considering the terrain in this part of the world. The old course (Quail) is more of a flat, traditional layout with narrow fairways and large, undulating greens. The trees that were planted back in the 1950s have grown up, providing some character to the otherwise flat, desert landscape. The toughest hole on this track is the 445-yard, par 4 No. 4, which plays uphill through a chute of trees, then doglegs right into a multi-tiered green protected by water. Multi-tiered is an understatement since there is a four-foot difference between the top and bottom levels.
