Ascarate opened in 1958 and was the first solo project of George Hoffman, who moved to West Texas from New Jersey when his family bought a ranch. It has long been considered one of the toughest courses in El Paso. The 18-hole course is accompanied by the much easier 9-hole Delta Nine Course, which caters to beginners and overflow traffic.
The Ascarate Course is mostly flat with only sporadic mounding. The design features undulating greens, plenty of trees to get in the way, and water on six of nine holes on the back.
Two holes stand out on the front nine: The 415-yard No. 4, which requires a bomb of a tee shot to set up a decent approach into a narrow green, and No. 5, a 217-yard par 3 that plays downhill from an elevated tee.
On the back, No. 11 is a butt-pucker hole playing 190 yards over a lake, and Ascarate's signature hole is the long par 4 18th hole.
