Maxwell Municipal Golf Course

About
Maxwell is a great municipal course because it does not overwhelm the average duffer with difficulty. You can generally work your way onto the course at any time, and the greens, have the reputation of being in outstanding condition. The design team of George Williams and Garrett Gill has worked on the course over the years.
The 526-yard par 5 2nd hole is the number one handicap, but No. 10 is another long par 5 that is tough. Hole 8 is tricky, featuring a severe dogleg left and trouble on the right. The back nine features short par 4s and two par 3s that require only an 8 or 9 iron at the most. Finish strong on 18, as it is only 326 yards from the middle tees.
Getting there : Driving west on I-20, exit 83/84. Find the Buffalo Gap Rd. exit and head back under the freeway, turning right onto Industrial Blvd. Proceed to Treadway , then turn left. Stay to the right because the road veers onto South 32nd St.

Fun course to play for the price !
I will start off with the good points first. The golf course is fun to play with a wide variety of holes. The price is fair and the pace of play is good most of the time. Scotty, at the club house, is a great host- eager to great you when you arrive to the course, and always ready with a snack or beverage on the turn, and genuinely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. The head pro/owner Guy has a nice assortment of used golf clubs for sale in the clubhouse. And the best part is the course is not that difficult if you can keep your approach shots below the hole on these sloped and fairly fast greens. On the downside - Most of the greens are extremely sloped and if you’re above the hold, it is very difficult to putt as they are so fast and slick that if you miss the putt, the ball will trickle almost off of the green in most cases. Also, no fault of the staff, but It would be better if the rules were followed by the “same” 5 and 6 somes who take advantage of the golf course honor system every weekend with impunity. Unfortunately, there is no visible Marshall to enforce this “World wide” golfers code of etiquette to this group of regulars with entitlement issues. And there’s no playing through them or any offers from the totally oblivious group. Add to that the conditions are fairly rough as there seems to be no pride in the appearance and maintenance. The ball washers are always empty, potholes riddle the cart paths, and there are numerous muddy areas that need to be fixed .I know that this is a municipal golf course but even walking up to the first tee box , you’ll have to maneuver around a big mud pit that for some reason, has never been addressed. It’s a shame because all these issues could be easily fixed with even a little bit of an investment and attention. Also, there are few “visible” markers in the fairways because the grass is growing over them and they haven’t been painted in years. There are no colored flags to show when the hole is front, middle, or back. Again - all seemingly easy fixes but a constantly ignored problem that keeps this course from being a higher rated and more enjoyable experience.
