Growing The Game
Warning: Short courses are a gateway drug which may lead to a long term addiction to the game, and may also cause cancer in California.
Every city needs short course (s) like this! A driving range and practice green are a great, but there is nothing quite like being on the course. Whether you have limited practice/play time or you're introducing the game to kids, your spouse, or friends, a course like this may be your best bet and can be a lot of fun to play.
The River's Edge is a 3 to 6 hole short course/ kid's course/ pitch-n-putt along the bank of the Trinity River, adjacent to the 11th fairway and 17th tee box on of Rockwood Golf Course. It can be played as 6 par 3's or 2 par 4's and 1 par 3.
Though it was built on flattish land near the river bank, the fairways are shaped with gentle mounds and contours which provide various lie angles to practice from and opportunities for a creative ground game. The greens are raised and surrounded by fairway cut collection areas, and are quite a bit slower than the main course which maybe in part because of the target demographic. The maintenance/ conditions are on par with the main course other than the slower greens, which are still very playable.
Today my son (5 y/o) and I had the course to ourselves and played the course forwards and backwards twice (22 holes), teeing off from various spots well off the edge of the greens. I had my LW thru 7 iron and all of his clubs in my bag, playing both full shots and punch and runs to the greens. I got to work on my scoring clubs, while also cheering on and caddying for my son. He had a great time and wanted to keep playing (We would have done the loop a few more times if it wasn't so darn hot). We stopped playing when we ran out of water, and there was no water on the course.
Often times you will see this course filled with kids from the First Tee of Fort Worth as they have various camps throughout the summer and lessons that meet throughout the year, as Rockwood is their home base and home to the Ben Hogan Learning Center. The course also has separate holes for foot golf.

The course consists of undulating fairways and perched greens surrounded by collection areas that gives you great uneven lies to practice from, and the humps and mounds provide the opportunity for artistic ground game. The greens are quite a bit slower than the main course which maybe in part because of the target demographic, but we're still very playable.
