Avery Ranch is one of Austin’s newest courses–it’s part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. Austinite Douglas Kinser approached the city in the late 1940s about improving the poor condition of the land occupied by the former Butler Brick Company. The Yaupon Course came along 12 years after Live Oak, and was particularly challenging for Howard’s return to the area because of the rocky terrain. Due to the lack of soil, construction required 100,000 cubic yards of soil to be dredged from the lake bottom and spread over the entire course.

Lions upstaged the prestigious sand-greened Austin Country Club when it opened with Bermuda greens in 1923, and has been Austin’s most beloved municipal ever since. Although no one knows for sure who officially designed this short, 6,000-yard classic, it appears that many members of Austin’s golf scene were involved, including Harvey and Tom Penick, and perhaps even the legendary John Bredemus.
