HORSESHOE BAY, Texas -- Officially opened by Jack Nicklaus himself in the fall of 2012, Summit Rock is the fourth golf course to come to the Horseshoe Bay Resort, located 50 miles west of Austin in the Texas Hill Country.
Summit Rock joins the original three courses at the resort, Slick Rock, Apple Rock and Ram Rock (all Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs), though this one is certainly different. For starters, the other three courses were all built in the 1970s. Also, Summit Rock will remain a private, stand-alone course at the resort and have its own clubhouse and facilities.
The golf course begins with two low-lying holes before heading up to the top of a ridge-line for the par-3 third hole. The ensuing holes feature long views of the surrounding countryside. The 11th plays from an elevated tee and heads downhill to a green, and the following par 3 is another dramatic downhill hole that brings the finishing stretch to another low-lying area playing around arroyos and wetlands.
Summit Rock has its own driving range and is currently building its own clubhouse. Among the 1,600 acres are 500-plus home sites currently for sale as large as 11 acres.
