The Clubs of Lakeway Earn Environmental Certification

AUSTIN, Texas -- Audubon International, a non-profit organization that promotes natural resource conservation through education and other assistance programs, has re-certified The Clubs of Lakeway as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The Clubs of Lakeway, which features the Yaupon and Live Oak courses, is one of only 11 courses in Texas to receive the designation.

To become certified by Audubon International a course must maintain its commitment to wildlife and habitat management, the reduction and safe use of chemicals, water conservation and quality management, and education. Courses go through a re-certification process every two years.

The Clubs of Lakeway has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program, said Peter Bronski, staff ecologist for the Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary System. They are to be commended for their continuing efforts to provide sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property.

The Clubs of Lakeway is maintained as an environmental safe-zone for the wildlife that inhabits its land, including: a large population of White-tailed Deer, and many species of birds; Black-crested Tufted Titmouse, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Great Blue Heron, Carolina Chickadee just to name a few. Combined, the Yaupon and Live Oak courses include 7.4 acres of lakes and 147 acres of natural plant communities. Audubon International recognized The Clubs of Lakeway for a number of environmental efforts, ranging from its safe storage, handling and low usage of fertilizers and chemicals to its judicious and responsible distribution of water.

Our grounds crew works hard to ensure our courses exceed environmental standards with a variety of stewardship programs, said Kimball Dempsey,

Vice President of The Clubs of Lakeway. We are honored to receive this certification for our efforts to preserve the natural habitat of this area.

The certification puts The Clubs of Lakeway in good company. Bethpage's Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, the site of this year's U.S. Open, is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
